UK winter 2026-27: what El Niño may mean for your household
Follow your local authorities. In an emergency call 999/911.
Why this winter
A very strong El Niño is under way in the Pacific. For the UK the effect is much weaker and less reliable than for the southern United States, and our confidence in any UK effect is low. The Met Office says El Niño raises the chance of a wetter, stormier autumn and early winter for north-west Europe including the UK (Met Office blog, 21 Aug 2026), and that later in the season it is associated with an increased risk of cold snaps (Met Office blog, 22 Sep 2026). It is one factor among many, and neither blog gives a UK probability. We do not quote one.
So the sensible plan is the one that works for both outcomes: wet and stormy, or a cold snap. Power cuts, flooding and carbon monoxide are the common thread.
Pick your region
Zone checklists, top ten actions first: North West England, Yorkshire and the Humber, Scotland, Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland has its own power-cut number and registers: see the NI power cut guide.
What to do, and when
This is the timing in our tables, counted from when you read it. It is a planning order, not a legal deadline.
- Now: check your long-term flood risk (free) at GOV.UK.
- Within 2 weeks: 3 days' supply of bottled drinking water for the household (about £5-£20) and 3 days of long-life ready-to-eat food (about £15-£40), with a tin opener and a flask (British Red Cross, kit); torches with spare batteries rather than candles (£5-£25, Red Cross, power cuts); a carbon monoxide alarm in each room with a gas, oil, coal or wood appliance (£10-£30, NHS); write the power-cut number 105 on paper and charge devices when severe weather is forecast (GOV.UK Prepare).
- Within a month: blankets and warm layers within reach; heat main rooms to about 18C where possible (Red Cross).
- During any power cut: keep fridge and freezer doors shut; throw away fridge food after 4 or more hours and freezer food after 24 or more hours without power (GOV.UK).
The safety rule that matters most
Never use a barbecue or camping stove indoors or in a tent, and never run a generator or other engine indoors or in an enclosed space such as a garage or shed (NHS, page dated 2025-12-16).
