Questions before you start (US)
Follow your local authorities. In an emergency call 999/911.
Short answers, each true of the site as it is built today. Each ends with the page or file that shows it.
Is it free, and what do you earn?
The checklists are free to read and print. Some links are affiliate links, marked sponsored: if you buy through one we may earn a commission at no cost to you, and safety advice is never changed for a commission. A paid pack may come later, but only if it is built; nothing is for sale today. The full wording is in the affiliate disclosure on the about page.
Where to check: the disclosure text in scripts/build_site.py (DISCLOSURE) and site/data/affiliate.json.
Do I need an account or an app, and will you send me alerts?
No account, no app. And no, the site does not push alerts: it has no notification code and nothing asks to send you messages. For live warnings use the official feeds linked on each checklist page (the National Weather Service, Ready.gov).
Where to check: view the source of any built page: its only script is /assets/checklist.js, which has no notification code (site/assets/checklist.js).
What do you keep about me, and how do I stop or delete?
By default nothing about you: no cookies, no analytics, no sign-up form. The email list is not open yet. When it opens it will be a sequence of 5 messages, each with an unsubscribe link, and the privacy notice will name the email tool before any form appears. Your ticks never leave your device: see the cookie notice and the last question below.
Where to check: content/legal/privacy.md, content/legal/cookies.md and the 5 drafts in content/email/us/.
How current is this, and what if a deadline has passed?
Every page says "Last reviewed" with a date, and a page without one does not build. Every action links its official source with the date we read it. Deadlines can pass or change: if a date has gone by, still do the action as soon as you can and open the linked source to see what applies to you today.
Where to check: the "Last reviewed" line at the top of any page and the require_reviewed check in scripts/build_site.py.
Who fixes a wrong fact?
We do, in public. Send the correction to the address on the corrections page; each fix is listed there with its date.
Where to check: content/corrections-log.csv, shown on the corrections page.
Where do my ticks live?
In this browser on this device only. They are saved in your browser's local storage so a refresh keeps them; they are not sent anywhere, and clearing your browser data removes them. A different browser or phone starts empty.
Where to check: site/assets/checklist.js (local storage, no network call).
